About the Blog

Grub & Grist is a chronicle of my adventures in the realm of do-it-yourself cookery. In the posts that follow I intend to haul granny out the cupboard and into the kitchen, to regain her cobwebbed and rusted skills. I will cure and can, pickle and salt; I will roast coffee beans and bake bread, make yoghurt, brew beer, roll pasta, and ferment vinegar. As opportunity permits I will fish streams and forage hillsides—even learn to hunt, skin, and butcher rabbits, spit roast a pig, and make my own wine. The possibilities are endless; let the expeditions begin!
